Husnuzon: Leaving What We Can’t Control

Life has a way of teaching us lessons we didn’t sign up for. We plan, we decide, we strive, and yet, so often, things do not unfold as we expect.

It is in these moments that I am reminded of something central to Islam: surrendering to Allah’s Qadar, and trusting His plan even when it feels unknown, unfair, or delayed.

For years, I carried the weight of wanting to control outcomes, relationships, careers, timing, even the smallest details of my day. And every time reality refused to bend, I felt disappointment, frustration, and fear.

It was exhausting.

Allah reminds us:

“No disaster strikes upon the earth or in yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into existence, indeed that, for Allah, is easy.”
(Surah Al-Hadid, 57:22)

This verse never felt more alive to me than when I learned to release what I could not change.
To leave it with Allah does not mean inaction. It does not mean indifference.
It means effort, followed by trust. Struggle, followed by surrender. Prayer, followed by patience.

The Prophet said:

“Know that if the entire nation were to gather together to benefit you with something, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already written for you. And if they gather to harm you, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already written for you.”
(Tirmizi)

These words are not meant to makes us passive, but to free us from the burden of trying to control the uncontrollable. To trust Qadar is to acknowledge: Allah’s wisdom surpasses our understanding. His timing is perfect. His mercy is infinite.

In daily life, this looks like:

  • Letting go of grudges that only hurt our own hearts

  • Releasing the urge to demand immediate answers from situations

  • Accepting that some paths are hidden, and some outcomes are not ours to decide

Husnuzon with Allah means believing that whatever He allows, whether we perceive it as hardship or blessing, is ultimately for our good.

“Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you, and perhaps you love something which is bad for you. Allah knows, and you do not know.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:216)

Surrender does not strip life of effort, it magnifies the purpose of every action.
We plant seeds, water them, and leave the harvest to Allah. We build, strive, and pray, and leave outcomes in His hands.

The heart that learns to leave what it cannot control grows lighter. Peace is no longer conditional on circumstances. Joy no longer depends on certainty.

I am still learning this lesson. To protect the peace and to cherish the joy by surrendering to Allah.

Every time I cling to control, life reminds me: not everything is mine to shape. Some things must be left, to Allah, to Qadar, to His infinite wisdom.

And every time I surrender, even a little, I feel husnuzon, good expectation, not just with people, not just with myself, but with Allah, the Planner of all plans.

And that, I am discovering, is where true freedom begins.
