Iqra ( Read / Recite )

I should have wrote this post as the first post. The importance in reading / recite in Islam triumph over all the other life lessons I posted earlier. Islam is rooted in Ilmu (knowledge). "Iqra" established that the very first step toward faith is awareness and learning. The ayat below is one of the few or perhaps my most favourite ayat in the whole Al-Quran just because of it's significant and meaning.

“Iqra’ bismi rabbika allathee khalaq…”
"Recite in the name of your Lord who created..."
(Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1)

The command to read or recite came at a time when the Prophet was unlettered, highlighting that knowledge in Islam is not just about literacy but seeking divine understandingThe Qur’an repeatedly encourages reflection, observation, and the use of reason.

"Say, Are those who know equal to those who do not know?"
(Qur’an 39:9)

The Qur’an repeatedly encourages reflection, observation, and the use of reason. The word "Iqra" calls Muslims to continue seeking knowledge, religious or worldly. The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim."
(Ibn Majah)

"Iqra" wasn’t just a call to read, it was to read in the name of your Lord. This frames learning as a spiritual act, done with God’s name, for His sake, leading to humility and deeper faith.

"Iqra" is more than a command, it's a mission:

  • It emphasized the value of knowledge over ignorance.
  • It called for a lifelong pursuit of understanding, both spiritual and intellectual.
  • It framed knowledge as a path to Allah, not just power or prestige.

As an additional note, pre 2018, I have a curious wandering mind and have always thirst for new knowledge and whenever there's something that spark my interest, I will go over and beyond to ensure I am well versed on the topic. This stopped after 2018 and I become comfortable with whatever I already have and my curiosity is channeled trhough experimenting substance and all the sinful thing. Everything I haven't tried, I wanted to do it out of curiosity.

“Iqra” is not just a call to read, it is an invitation:

To open your eyes to truth,
To open your heart to meaning,
To open your soul to the Divine.

So read,
Read to remember Who made you.
Read to grow past what confines you.
Read until your knowledge leads you to humility, and your humility leads you to God.
